Harald Pietz, Acting Director, Stakeholder Outreach and Engagement Unit, CDC
Harald Pietz serves as the acting director for the Stakeholder Outreach and Engagement Unit in the Office for State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support (OSTLTS). He previously served as branch chief for the Health Department and Systems Development Branch, Division of Public Health Performance Improvement, OSTLTS.
Pietz started with CDC in 1990. He has worked as a personnel generalist providing support to various CDC centers, institutes, and offices. Pietz was also an environmental protection specialist in the Office of Health and Safety (OHS), where he helped to establish and expand CDC’s environmental compliance audit program, and lead CDC’s pollution prevention and hazardous waste minimization efforts, among other projects.
Pietz moved from OHS and became a management analyst at the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), Office of Policy, Evaluation and Legislation, where he was the team lead for strategic planning, project officer to the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, worked on Healthy People 2010 and various special projects. Following the events of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent anthrax attacks, Pietz became the principle deputy responsible for forming and developing NCEH’s Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response Office.
Pietz then moved to CDC’s Office of Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response, where as a member of the senior leadership team, he served as the senior emergency operations liaison, responsible for federal coordination and planning, and numerous special projects. Pietz eventually moved on to become the senior advisor to the director of the Portfolio Management Program, where he provided advice and support in standing up the program, and he was the lead in developing CDC’s Nationwide State Assessment Portfolios, the Business Services Improvement Project, and served as the emergency response coordinator.
Pietz brings to OSTLTS a wealth of experience in developing new initiatives and programs having contributed to, and led many exciting opportunities for CDC throughout his 20+ years. During the events of September 11, 2001, Pietz served in the ad hoc Emergency Operations Center (EOC), and was twice deployed to New York City to assist with the anthrax response. Following these events, Pietz began a concentration in public health emergency preparedness, response, and recovery and has been engaged in multiple public health emergencies, either as a deployed responder or serving in the EOC. He has had an active part in CDC’s response including: SARS; space shuttle Columbia; hurricanes Isabel, Katrina, Rita, Ivan, Gustav, and Ike; numerous “white powder” events; Ricin; and the Haiti earthquake response.
Pietz holds a bachelor of arts, cum laude, in political science, with a minor in military science from Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama.
